What are Blackheads?
Blackheads are a type of acne and are often found on oily skin types, but are experienced by most people at some point during their life. These “open” comedones develop when hair follicles become blocked by debris, excess oil, and dead skin cells. Oxidisation causes the dark or black appearance which gives blackheads their name.
Blackheads are commonly found on the face but can also develop on the back, chest, neck, arms, and shoulders. A blackhead will usually remain pain-free, this is because, unlike pimples, when a blackhead forms bacteria do not invade the follicle – blackhead will therefore only be slightly raised and dark in colour.

Why Do Blackheads Develop?
Blackheads are similar to whiteheads in their formation – both are caused by a blockage of a follicle. A whitehead forms when there is skin over the bump which results in a white appearance. A blackhead forms when the skin over the bump opens which allows the blockage to oxidise and causes a dark appearance.
What Causes Blackheads?
If hair follicles become clogged a blackhead may form. Follicles can often collect debris, oils, and dead skin cells which cause a blockage and result in a bump – if the skin over this bump opens a blackhead will form. Blackhead may be more common if:
• Your skin produces too much oil.
• Hair follicles become irritated if skin cells don’t shed regularly.
• There is a buildup of the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria.
• There are hormonal changes that cause more oil production.
• Corticosteroid, lithium, or androgen drugs are used.
