Pigmentation: Causes, Symptoms, & Treatment
Pigmentation: Causes, Symptoms, & Treatment
What is Skin Pigmentation?
The colour of your skin, hair, and eyes are determined by the naturally occurring pigment called Melanin – found in skin cells. A higher amount of Melanin tends to be associated with darker skin types. Melanin production can be effected through damage or skin disorders which can lead to inconsistent colouration, patterning of the skin, and a blotchy appearance – this is referred to as a skin pigmentation disorder.
The most common skin pigmentation issues are associated with either Hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is caused when damaged around healthy skin cells begin to produce high levels of Melanin in an effort to help protect the skin cell, this leads to darker patches on the skin. In contrast, Hypopigmentation is caused when the skin cell becomes so damaged its Melanin production completely stopped and leads to white or pale blotching of the skin.
While most skin pigmentation disorders usually are not dangerous, they can cause issues with self-confidence. it is possible to treat some skin pigmentation disorders with medical or cosmetic attention to help ease symptoms and keep it under control. Élan Laser Clinics are a trusted name in the treatment of a range of skin pigmentation issues, read on to discover how we can help.
Pigmentation Causes & Risk Factors
Why Does Pigmentation Develop?
Skin pigmentation disorders occur when the levels of Melanin within skin cells reach abnormal levels. High levels of Melanin production are associated with Hyperpigmentation (causing darker skin), and low levels of Melanin production are linked to Hypopigmentation (causing lighter skin patches).
What Can Cause Pigmentation?
Skin pigmentation disorders are almost completely hereditary, meaning those with a family history of pigmentation issues are at higher risk of developing a pigmentation disorder in their life. Hyperpigmentation issues are commonly associated with sun exposure and therefore usually found on the face, arms, and legs. But, pigmentation problems can also be caused by skin trauma including acne, cuts, burns, or lupus which can form anywhere on the body.
A pigmentation disorder can present itself in different forms. The symptoms of skin pigmentation are directly associated with the cause of the pigmentation problem.
Patches appear in varying shades. Pigmentation may be lighter or darker than the natural skin tone.
Discolouration of the skin may be noticed in an area which has experienced trauma – inflammation or injury.
Prolonged sun exposure can lead to darker patches on the skin. The promients of these areas is directly associated with sun exposure.
Areas of dicolouration which are visibly raised above the surface of the skin. These can become larger over time.
There are several common types of skin pigmentation that can greatly vary in severity from just small discoloured areas to larger, more noticeable patches. Skin pigmentation disorders are commonly made worse by exposure to sunlight which can cause areas to become darker or more noticeable.
