Sun Damage: Causes, Symptoms, & Treatment

Skin conditions can develop as a direct result of exposure to the sun. Ultraviolet light found in the sun’s rays is harmful to skin cells and damages them over time. Damaged skin cells are more prone to skin conditions, some of which can be dangerous.

What is Sun Damage?

Sun Damage Causes & Risk Factors

Sun Damage Types & Symptoms

Symptoms of Sun Damage

Sun damage usually presents itself in seven different forms which vary in both severity to your health and to your self-confidence.

UV light causes the outer most layers of skin to become inflamed. Those with less melanin in their skin will be affected by sunburn more frequently than those with more. Sunburns can range from mild soreness to blistered skin.

UV rays can increase the number of free radicals in the skin, these can go on to damage elastin fibers which can contribute to the wrinkling of the skin. The exposure to UV light is proportional to the damage caused.

Actinic Keratoses

Actinic Keratoses is a scaly precancerous spot that can form on sun-damaged skin. It is caused as a result of DNA deformations due to UVB radiation from sunlight. As skin ages naturally Actinic Keratoses is more likely to form.

Age Spots

Age spots (also called liver spots) are small, dark areas on the skin that vary in size. They are caused when the skin tries to protect itself from over exposure to sunlight and are commonly found on adults aged over 50.

Thread Veins

UV exposure can lead to a reduced amount of collagen in the skin – collagen is a structural protein found in fibrous tissue in the body. Collagen maintains the strength and elasticity of your blood vessels, as levels drop they can become dilated and more fragile.

Skin Cancers

Skin cancer is the fifth most prevalent cancer in the UK. It is caused by the uncontrolled growth of cells due to a deformation in the DNA structure. Radiation form the sun can have a direct impact on the likelihood of developing skin cancer.

Exposure to the sun can sometimes lead to uneven production of melanin, this can cause patchy colouring on the skin. Sun exposure can also lead to small blood vessels stretching permanently which causes a blotchy or red appearance.
